I train three days on, one day off.
I'll do a weights workout on day one, followed by a couple days of aerobics workouts – mainly on my treadmill in winter, and more running outside in spring/summer. Then I rest one day, and repeat the process.
I lost some condition and laxed on my diet a little following the bust up with my ex gf, but got over that pretty quick and am back training full time.
I have a lower back problem that not even a 15 year layoff could repair, so heavy squatting and bent over rows, and heavy dead lifts are out. This is annoying because those movements used to be my strong points. When I first trained with weights way back as a 17 year old to help with my Rugby League, I worked up to being able to squat 160 kilos (350lbs) for one rep, and deadlift 180 kilos (395lbs) for a couple reps. I couldn't dream of doing that now, my dodgy lower back would snap. But I work around that little problem as best I can.
Sometimes I even work out on my day off, a short run maybe.
I train a max of two body parts per weight session.
My aim is to be in the best possible shape I can be for a 40 year old male. I'm lucky I guess in that I am not married, have no kids, and am basically free to do what I went once I leave my day job. This is not a luxury most men my age have. True – this shouldn't be an excuse for people to blow off getting in shape – but it does make it that much harder. Too bad, their choice to get hitched, produce juniors, and become locked into a certain lifestyle. Getting back onto the fitness/health bandwagon was a large part of the reason my ex and me broke up. You would think that someone doing something positive for themselves would endear encouragement from the gal, but no. So it often is in life – when you do something to start bettering yourself, those closest to you are your biggest hurdles. They accuse you of being selfish, and ………….. uh, no – I am going to shuddup talking about her because I feel another rant against my ex gf coming on!
Sure – no one can slow time, but I want to slow the effects of time – yes I want to look good, but more importantly, I want to stay athletically able for another good 30 years minimum. I have plans to leave my 9-5 existence within 4 years to lead a different life, and adventuresome, challenging life, so I am going have to find a way to workout when I no longer will be in regular reach of exercise equipment. I'll worry about that when the time comes.
Pic is of my workout room. Basic equipment only – but it does the job. I couldn't work out at a commercial gym regularly. Too many hot ass chicks running around in their tight gym gear. Puts me off my workout and I just can't concentrate.
I mean, look at this gym-chick in the pic below. Could you work out seriously while taking sneaky peeks at her ass? After I accidentally on purpose chose to use the treadmill right next to the one she is using, I'd be likley to fall off the bloody treadmil and injure myself.
When I have worked out in commerical gyms now and again, I see more socialisng going on than serious work. I suppose it would be a gamers paradise – but this is one part of my life that I want game free.
